MusicalThe musical was a smashing success! The students were great singers, dancers, and actors! I am so proud of them! 5th grade picnicNext Friday will be the fifth grade picnic. Students are encouraged to wear sunscreen, sunglasses or a hat, comfortable gym shoes, and bring a water bottle since we will be spending the majority of the day outside. A pizza lunch will be provided. I know this will be great day! MathThe class took a test this week that covered the rest of Unit 6. Since only 4 students earned A+ on the test, I allowed everyone who did not earn an A+ to retake the test today. The students' grades went up dramatically and I will be sending the test home today.
Next week, we will be starting a math project where students will have to plan a vacation and research the costs. I know students will be looking forward to thinking about taking a vacation! MusicalThe students are so excited for the musical next week! The class will be performing with Mrs. Vickers' and Mrs. Pierce's class on Thursday, May 17th. They will be performing for the fourth graders at 9:30 am and performing for parents at 7 pm. The doors will open at 6:30 pm and students can wait in our classroom before the musical begins. I can't wait to see it!! ReadingOn Monday, Mrs. Pierce, Mrs. Vickers, and I will be mixing up our students and dividing them into 3 new classes. Each class will read a different historical fiction novel based on the Revolutionary War. Mrs. Pierce's class will be reading Sophia's War, Mrs. Vickers will be reading Toliver's Secret, and I will be reading Woodsrunner. This is a great way for students to see some new faces and to stay engaged in reading until the end of the year. ScienceWe have started a new science unit on space. I have been impressed with the class's background knowledge! We have discussed the planets in our solar system as well as their relative sizes. We have also discussed the sizes, ages, and distances of various planets, stars, and galaxies. The class was amazed at the size of the universe!
GDR PacketSince GDR is over, your child's GDR packet has been graded and returned to him or her today. This GDR packet is considered a test grade and does require a parent signature if the grade is a C, D, or F. If your child did earn a C, D, or F, then he or she may correct it for half credit. Thanks!
Math TestWe have decided to divide the chapter 6 test into two mini-tests. The first test will be on Wednesday, May 2nd. A review will be sent home on Monday, April 30th. The test will cover:

We are continuing to learn about the Revolutionary War. The students have enjoyed learning about how the Continental Army struggled but managed to overtake the British. We will continue to learn about this next week and we should have a test on Thursday, May 3rd. ReadingDuring our Fantasy unit, we will be focusing on:
WritingStudents are currently in the middle of taking their pretest on narrative writing. The unit is based on writing a cohesive story either real or imagined with a clear beginning, middle, or end, clear understandable events, using transition words, developing a story with narrative techniques, and using descriptive words and sensory language. The students will have a rubric to guide them.
The class is very excited to write stories and are very happy to start this unit. I know that this will pair nicely with what they are doing in reading class. Science!IMPORTANT INFO: We will be starting our Human Growth, Development, and Reproduction (GDR) unit after spring break. All students will be completing homework every night that will require a parent signature. If your child completes all of the homework on time, then he or she will not have to take the test. Let me know if you have any questions! On a lighter note, it has been so much fun to have fish, crickets, and worms in our classroom! Here are some pictures of our creatures as well as our blooming sweet potatoes. NEw Reading and Writing unitsAfter break, we will start new reading and writing units. Our reading unit will be focused on fantasy and understanding the characteristics of that genre. In writing, we will be working on narrative writing. The class is very excited to start these new units. Math unitAfter break, we will begin a new unit in math. It will focus on:
Great job on Conferences!Wow! I was so impressed by the amazing portfolios that the students created. They have really improved since the beginning of the year. I am so proud of all of my students! Thank you for coming and meeting with me. Math testOur math test will be on Thursday, March 22nd. It will cover:
wrapping up reading/WritingThe class loved making inferences with the Kate Klise books so much that we decided to read the sequels of the novels. We will continue to work on inferring until spring break. The class will also wrap up our persuasive essay until before spring break as well. The class will write their last essay that they can get adult and peer support next week. Starting Monday, March 19th they will write a final post-test independently. I have seen huge growth in the last few weeks so it will be fun to compare their pre- and post-test to see how much they grew! Routine change
Social StudiesNext week, we will be starting our next unit in Social Studies. We will learn about the events and laws that lead up to the American Revolution. Then we will hold class debates on each law or event with a pair of students representing the American side and a pair of students representing the British point of view. Reading UnitWe have begun a new reading unit as well! We have finished working on writing opinion papers in reading, although we will continue that in writing. In addition, we were able to study propaganda techniques and compare propaganda to opinion essays. For our next unit, we will return to fiction and we will focus on making inferences. As a whole class, we are reading The One and Only Ivan, since it is a familiar text and we can focus on delving deeper into the thinking behind making inferences. Then students will read novels based on their level and continue to make inferences with that text. Odds and Ends
